Opening Statement
The Ossian Volunteer Fire Department (OFD) is a private volunteer fire corporation.  Today, it provides fire protection services to the Town of Ossian and Jefferson Township, and also provides rescue services to Union Township.  These services are provided through contracts between all parties.

Department Equipment

The Ossian Fire Department has a fleet of 8 apparatus.   These apparatus are purchased and maintained by the Town of Ossian and Jefferson Township.  These vehicles carry a wide variety of equipment that allows the firemen to perform their duties in saving lives and property.  All this equipment is purchased with taxpayer dollars and sometimes money that has been donated to the department.  The apparatus the OFD has are:

Engine 601
This vehicle is a 2008 Custom Crimson Fire Engine on a Spartan Chassis.  This was purchased by the Town of Ossian in 2008 and has the capacity to carry 1,000 gallons of water.  It has a 1250 gpm Hale pump, carries 1000’ of 5” supply hose line, and is equipped with a deck gun and Class A & B foam.  This vehicle also carries an extrication combination tool to perform work on accident scenes if necessary.  It can transport up to six firefighters and is the main response vehicle for the Town.

Engine 602
This vehicle is a 1999 S&S Fire Engine on an International Chassis.  This vehicle was purchased by the Town of Ossian in 1999 and was sold to Jefferson Township in 2008.  It has the capacity to carry 1,000 gallons of water and has a 1250 gpm Waterous pump.  It can transport up to five firefighter and is the main response vehicle for any Township fires.

Rescue 6
This vehicle is a 2002 E-One Apparatus on a Freightliner Chassis.  This vehicle was purchased by Jefferson Township in 2002 and serves both the Town and Township.  This vehicle carries no water, but carries many pieces of equipment.  On this vehicle is a full compliment of extrication tools that include, hydraulic spreaders, cutters, and ram extensions.  This vehicle responds to all fire/rescue calls.  This vehicle can transport up to five firefighters to the scene.

Tanker 605
This vehicle is a 1994 S&S Apparatus on an International chassis.  This vehicle was purchased by Jefferson Township in 1995.  It holds 2,000 gallon of water and has quick dumps on the rear and both sides for easy dumping.  It also carries a 2,000 gallon drop tank.  The vehicle has a 1,000 gpm pump which can be a secondary pump at the scene if needed.  This vehicle can transport up to two firefighters to the scene.

Tanker 606
This vehicle is two person cab and is a 2001 Freightliner.  It holds 1,500 gallons of water and also has a 2,000 gallon drop tank.  606 is equipped with a pump which is capable of pump and roll operations useful for a field fire.

Grass Rig 607
This vehicle is used for grass or field fires and is also being used for first responder calls.  This truck is a 2008 Ford F-350 and was purchased by the Town of Ossian in 2008.  A new skid unit was purchased in 2004.  The tank holds 300 gallons of water and also has foam capabilities. 

Truck 608
This vehicle is used for our ice rescue equipment and also serves as a rehabilitation unit.  This vehicle was acquired by Wells County after Bluffton used this vehicle for many years as their rescue.  This truck has a walk-in box in the back which allows the firefighters to either cool off in the summer or warm up in the winter.  Many refreshments are carried to supply to the firefighters on the scene of an incident.

Command Car 610
This car was given to the fire dept. by the Ossian Town Council.  This vehicle was an Ossian police car prior to being given to the fire dept.  It is a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria.  This vehicle is used by the fire dept. on scenes for the command post and to carry firefighters to and from training outside our response area.
